Kenny Motsamai offered release after 27 years

in jail

William George 18 January 2016
UPDATE: Kenny Motsamai  was returned back to his cell after declining to sign for day parole
on Monday.
Azanian People’s Liberation Army (Apla) member Kenny Motsami was set to be released
on Monday after the 27 years of imprisonment for murder of a traffic officer in Rustenburg
during an Apla-sanctioned robbery.
The murder was committed in the apartheid era, and Motsamai was imprisoned for 5 years under
the apartheid government and served the remaining 22 years in the new democracy.
On the day of release, it was reported that Motsamai refused to sign the papers of parole.

Motsamai, who has served his sentence since January 1989, reportedly refused to sign the parole
documents because he did not know what the parole conditions were.
According to eNCA, Motsamai was to be released on conditions that require his return to prison
by 4pm daily, also referred to as ‘day parole’.
The now 53-year-old  was part of an Apla mission that went to rob a supermarket in Rustenburg
in 1989.
This is how day parole works: “provides offenders with the opportunity to participate in
on-going community-based activities. Ordinarily, the offender resides at a correctional institution
or community residence. Offenders are also granted day parole in order to prepare for full parole
and statutory release.”
