BY TETSEKELA ANYIAM-OSIGWE

During this difficult time in our lives, we are involuntarily called, once again, to examine life in all its complexity. This moment implores us to remember that we are not all-knowing. It reminds us of the deep uncertainty that God tells us that we must confront on our early sojourns while having an unshakable faith in Him and the mystery of our existence: the uncertainty of who we are and what we are, of what we know and what we do not know, of why we are here and what we are here for; the uncertainty of what we leave behind and why we leave those things behind.

Two things were deemed the most important to Peace Marie Ogechi Anyiam-Osigwe (PMO) and she would tell anyone this freely: family and being the undiluted creative pushing for Africa to be fully recognised in the global film industry. Both saw her give more than herself, even and especially at the expense of herself. She leaves both behind, perhaps with the knowledge that only God and now she has, of God’s own plan for the manifestation of His glory within those she loved and the legacy she so earnestly and faithfully crafted.

For her, family was and remains her father’s greatest legacy to her. In a predominantly patriarchal society, Papa made her believe it was not about gender but about personality and carriage. Even in the midst of seven older brothers, she found herself standing on an equal footing. She never felt small or inferior. If anything, she was rightly emboldened to cement her place as an irreplaceable member of the family, becoming a mother, an aunt and a positive change agent cultivating a deeper sense of togetherness.

The only thing that equalled her commitment to family was her passion for the film industry. More than anyone else, she promoted the creative industry not only in Nigeria but also in Africa. Last year, she celebrated nearly four decades within this industry. She remained at the forefront of the process of expanding the business of film in Africa and making the industry a major contributor to the national economies of African countries and a global player on the world stage. As one of the African film industry’s leading lights, she cultivated the next generation of African filmmakers while rewarding the current generation of filmmakers across the country, the continent and the diaspora, who, in many ways, had started this journey with her. Several national and pan-continental programs and initiatives were created with her at the helm; consciously, productively and constructively bridging the divide between African filmmaking communities and the rest of the global marketplace.

She did not just do one thing but did it all: CEO and founder of the African Movie Academy Awards (AMAA), founder and chair of the African Film Academy (AFA), president of the Association of Movie Producers of Nigeria, a Nigerian national honour recipient as a Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR), a former financial director of the Filmmakers Cooperative of Nigeria (FCON), a past vice-president of the Association of Movie Producers of Nigeria, a TED Fellow, a jury member of international film festivals, a former creative director and co-founder of the Africa International Film Festival, a published poet with three books to her name, a former television talk show host, the owner of a publishing company, the owner of a film studio, and a producer and a director of multiple Nollywood films.

Despite everything she had going on personally that could and would have stopped any other person, she relentlessly maintained her unyielding commitment to the creative industry. In a given year, she might have had to be in Berlin, then would go on to receive an award in California, then make a speech in Washington D.C, fly to Kigali to make yet another speech before finding herself on a flight back to Lagos to meet with her home-based team. This was, in many ways, her breakdown point, but she wanted to, and she did, continue. She often said she could not stop; that the work was not complete. Indeed, she was the personification of resilience. Perhaps most importantly, she simply wanted to do it for African cinema. It was not about her individually. It was not even about the money. It was about the passion to promote and celebrate creative excellence in Africa. At every opportunity, she was speaking to anyone who would listen about the potential for African cinema to be a creative heavyweight in the world.

She never knew, until she began this journey, that her body could generate a much-needed extra supply of energy as far as she was doing exactly what she was passionate about. This is why we cannot even begin the process of fully comprehending her immense contribution to her community, the country, the continent, and the world at large, which produced an unrivalled legacy of accomplishments globally and within the creative industry for nearly four decades.

One might never know what she was going through internally because her strength knew no possible bounds. In many ways, this is why her transcendence is too difficult to understand, but perhaps this is also why, as difficult as it may be, she would implore us to try to accept the unthinkable. Perhaps there are some things, the knowledge of which is reserved for those blessed and privileged enough to attain perfect alignment with the Chi and ultimately reach a divine and conscious unity with God.

Therefore, it is the case that we must be resolved, and never resigned, armed with the belief that earthly life in all its perplexity will always be a complex phenomenon in which the puzzle is never meant to be solved by those left behind. Yet, to the degree that we are assured in the divine knowledge that there is indeed a Supreme Being who governs the universe, we should remain hopeful in the knowledge that “Ogechikamma,” it is God’s time that is the best.

When I had to give her an answer about life over ten years ago at such a naive age, I said this in part: Life is a string of moments. Actions define moments. Decisions define actions. Character defines decisions. Personality defines character. And death is outlived by personality. It is not until now that I am realising why she told me that she held onto that so deeply. She willingly surrendered to God’s will in everything, letting Him drive her moments, mediate her actions, guide her decisions, shape her character, and direct her personality. When the time came for Him to decide to bring back his daughter into His heavenly presence, she knew that those she was going to leave behind will eventually understand that as far as God remained at the wheel of earthly life, death was only transitory. It was another moment, orchestrated by God, in the long string of moments that define life. Indeed, Ogechikamma, it is God’s time that is the best.

She fiercely believed that there was a Chi in everyone – that God manifests Himself within man, so that man was blessed with the presence of God within himself. She believed that the Chi brings hope and that the Chi controls human destiny. She said it was evident even in her name, “Ogechi.” So, even if we might like to have things done on our own time, even if we do not understand our present reality, even if we struggle to comprehend the ‘why’ and we fail to make sense of the ‘how,’ we must be reminded that it is always subject to the will of each individual’s Chi.

And, in our asking God of the why, in our need to understand this ultimate test from the Chi of the universe, perhaps the answer is not for us to know exactly. Even if it is hard, we cannot question anymore. In her own words, the Chi never promised an easy ride. The Chi never said to us that life is going to be easy; what the Chi did say to us was that this is what we have at the moment. Deal with it, cope with it, and in time, we will come to understand it, knowing full well that Ogechikamma, it is God’s time that is the best.

May the Chi be with her as she begins her eternal journey, shining always in the light of God’s everlasting presence. May God, in this everlasting presence, hold her closely as she dwells forever in His heavenly place. May God, in His infinite mercy and bountiful love, also give us all – her children, her family, her friends, and her colleagues – the strength we need during this very difficult period. Beyond it, may He find us worthy enough to receive the blessing of the divine knowledge and complete acceptance that truly Ogechikamma, it is God’s time that is the best.

God is angry, I’ll never support wicked man to be Nigerian President – Oyedepo vows

Published on

Bishop David Oyedepo of Living Faith Church has vowed never to render his support to any wicked politician who is nursing the ambition of ruling the country.

Oyedepo, who spoke while leading his congregation on prayer for the nation particularly for the February and March general elections, said God is angry with the wicked leaders.

Speaking on alleged practice of nepotism by the Nigerian leaders, Oyedepo asserted that there are no tribes without citizens capable of leading the country.

He said, “There are no tribes and regions without competent men with the character and capacity to lead Nigeria and there are no tribes and regions without incompetent people. More often than not, it is incompetent people who get there.

“There are no tribes and regions in Nigeria without competent men with the character and capacity to lead Nigeria. The day I will support a wicked to reign in Nigeria will not meet me here. I am on God’s side.

“God is angry with the wicked every day, I can’t be in love with the wicked. If you are in love with the wicked, you are a hater of God. You hate God with passion”.

Pastor Jerry & Eno Eze talk Love, Marriage & God’s Work as they Cover MODE MEN Magazine

Published

on

Jerry Eze and Eno Eze, founders of Streams of Joy International and New Season Prophetic Prayers and Declarations Ministry (NSPPD), are the cover stars of Issue 106 of Mode Men Magazine.

In the Valentine’s and Mother’s Day-themed edition, the couple talks about life, love, marriage, and God’s work.

See excerpts from the interview below:

About his first encounter with God:

I may not remember my first encounter with God per se, but I grew up in a church where the biggest achievement was hearing from Him, so I had a God-filled childhood. I knew God quite early, I began to minister to people as a child, and ministry for me literally began whilst in Primary School. Let’s say what I have spent most of my life in Ministry, though, with education and career activities by the side at some point.

Why he chose social media as a tool for his ministry:

I didn’t set out to use social media for ministry. I had done ministry for over 10 years before the advent of social media. But when I started the Streams of Joy Devotional, I felt it was best to share it on social media, as against keeping it strictly for sale. Sales didn’t have excellent numbers, but the Devotional was all over social media. Other things followed and we streamed church services on social media even before the Covid-19 pandemic. We started NSPPD initially for our members and others to be encouraged. What you see today was not planned, and was not really the goal.

On meeting his wife:

I met my wife during my undergraduate studies at the University. I had someone close to me who knew her, liked her very well and always talked about her. One thing led to another, and I knew that she was meant to be my wife.

How he knew that she was the one:

I heard from God clearly that she was my wife, it was divinely orchestrated and God has never been in error when He speaks to me.

The connection he shares with his wife:

We both share a passion for prayer and ministry generally, and we both like to laugh.

Advice for couples about relationships:

“Let God be the center of your relationship, and please find someone who loves God more he/she loves you.”

Eno Eze

Journey before ministry and encounter with God:

Well, I was one of those who found God early in life. I gave my life to Christ in primary school. I had always loved God so even when I didn’t understand what I was doing. I just loved being in church. I remember coming out to give my life to Christ almost every Sunday once an altar call was done because I didn’t know better (lol). But my first encounter with God was in Secondary school.

On meeting her husband:

I met my husband in my 300 Level at the University. My husband was the pastor of All Saints Chapel of Redemption in school. It was a big deal in those days. He was popular and everyone was talking about this new pastor that could preach so well. That was how I got to know him. I just knew him from a distance. However, on the 15th of November 2002, we had a relationship program in my fellowship and I remember sowing a seed for marriage and praying that night like never before. By the next day, the 16th of November, 2002, my husband walks up to me and tells me that God asked him to meet me and tell me he is my husband. You can imagine. It took me a while to agree finally. So, ours started from the onset with marriage in view. We courted for 5 years before we finally got married. The is the abridged version though.

Quotable Quotes:

“If you want to learn how to love then you need to have a relationship with God. There is no love outside of God because God is LOVE. It is in God that we learn how to love.”

I'm confident the economy will bounce back to normal with God's help - Akufo-Addo

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has called on the Church to pray for Ghana, himself and his administration to surmount the current economic challenges confronting the nation.

“I plead strongly with the church to bear the nation and me continually up in prayers. As God’s children, we may be tempted to allow struggles to define our worth. However, our ultimate victory is guaranteed. We may stumble along the way, but we will always be more than conquerors,” he said.

The president made the call at a Special New year Eucharist Service held on his behalf by the Archbishops, Bishops, and Clergy of the Anglican Church of Ghana at the Jubilee House Accra on Tuesday.

Prayers were offered for the President and his family, the Vice President, the government, and for peace and tranquility to prevail in the country, and for Ghanaians to have the patience to support the government as it sought solutions to take the country out of the current economic crisis.

The Special Mass was attended by the First lady, Rebecca Akufo-Addo, the Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the Chief of Staff, Madam Akosua Frema Osei-Opare, and some senior government officials.

President Akufo-Addo told the gathering that he was confident that Ghana’s economy would bounce back stronger in 2023.

He reiterated his belief “that with the spirit of fairness hard work, integrity and reconciliation, the best days of Ghana lie ahead of us.”

“Even though we are presently confronted with difficulties in economic performance, I do not doubt our collective resolve to work our way out of these challenges and put our nation back onto the path of progress and prosperity,” he said.

Primate and Metropolitan Archbishop, Most Rev. Dr Cyril Kobina Ben-Smith, of the Anglican Communion, Internal Province of Ghana, in his homily, themed “New Mercies, New Love and New Hope for Ghana,” said God’s love for Ghana remained sure and rang true.

“Your excellency, we wish to assure the government and the people of Ghana that God’s faithfulness remains sure for our nations. Despite the challenges and the times that the world finds itself, God’s promises still ring true, His mercies are new every morning.

“God is still God. Let all the people of Ghana know that God is still God, and He directs all our affairs and we should bless the Lord in all circumstances despite our challenges.”

The Primate said the building of the National Cathedral was enough testimony of President Akufo-Addo’s devotion to God and “no matter the Naysays, it will happen”

“Your excellency, you and other world leaders, King David faced the same challenges that we are still experiencing…the murmuring of the people, the lamentations from the crowds, the abuse and lack of understanding of the issues that are clear to all, yet David stood resolute in his conviction amid opposition.

“The God of Ghana is our refuge, let us keep faith with our President in all times. Ghana will not perish; Ghana will recover, and Ghana will reclaim every lost territory. I entreat all Ghanaians to pray for Ghana and for favour for the leadership of the nation.

“Let the people of Ghana understand that with God all things are possible. If we trust Him, the economy will bounce back,” he said.

He urged market women, traders, commercial drivers and businesspeople to complement the efforts of the Government by reducing the process of goods and services.

CALLING ON GOD

The Guardian publisher urges security consciousness, trust in God

Ubani blames bad leadership for Nigeria’s woes

Publisher of The Guardian Newspapers, Lady Maiden Alex-Ibru has called on Nigerians to be more security-conscious in the face of different challenges confronting the country and, above all, trust God for their maximum protection.

She added that Nigerians should be very conscious of the choice of leadership and never to be biased in the coming elections, as she prayed God to take over the country’s leadership.

The publisher spoke as a Special Guest of Honour yesterday at the Bible Society of Nigeria (BSN) Founder’s Day Lecture and Awards with the theme, ‘Credible Elections: A Desired Paradigm Shift and Pathway to Responsible Governance’, which held at Muson Centre, Onikan, Lagos.

Guest Speaker at the occasion, Monday Ubani, narrowed down the problem of moving the country forward to bad leadership, as Nigeria has been unlucky to be consistently run by bad leaders who are greedy and unpatriotic, turning the country to their personal property.

He cited the Naira redesign policy, which has brought untold sufferings to Nigerians, adding that any policy, no matter the intention, that brings suffering on the governed, could only be made by bad leaders, who are not concerned about the citizenry.

The human rights activist called on Nigerians to leverage the Electoral Act that has made some innovative provisions in terms of deployment of technology in the electoral process.

He charged Nigerians to also improve the human factor by changing their parameters in the choice of their leaders, which had been dictated by primordial sentiments.

The President and Board Chairman, BSN, Bishop Timothy Banwo, said for the country to move forward, Nigerians should elevate the God factor and believe in the Bible.

General Secretary/CEO of BSN, Samuel Sanusi, said the event was organised to remember the good works done over the years by the founders of BSN and to award people who have done well in their works, as he solicited assistance to spread the Bible across the various languages in Nigeria.

MIRACLE FROM TURKEY

Video: Christian Atsu’s family sings praises to God after footballer’s rescue

The family house of Christian Atsu was overtaken by joy following news that the footballer has been pulled out of a rubble caused by the earthquake in Turkey.

Video: Christian Atsu’s family sings praises to God after footballer’s rescue

On Monday, it emerged that the 31-year-old winger had been trapped in the rubble after a devastating earthquake hit the country.

Atsu, who currently plays for Turkish side Hatayspor, had been trapped under the rubble together with the club’s sporting director Taner Savut.

However, after hours of searching for the duo, it was confirmed on Tuesday morning that the Ghanaian has finally been found alive and is receiving treatment at a hospital.

A visit to the footballer’s family house in Accra by sports journalist Dan Kwaku Yeboah showed the ecstasy with which they received the news of his rescue.

In a video shared on YouTube, the Peace FM head of sports spoke to Atsu's senior brother and other members of his family, who were captured singing praises to God for rescuing their kin.

The footballer’s senior brother Isaac Yeye Twasam said: "The entire nation backed us in prayers so I knew God will deliver my brother. Although we heard the news, we wanted to confirm it from the club. So I called the agent and we kept in touch."

Atsu’s aunty, Mama Comfort, also added: “We’ve been unable to sleep, I have been praying. Everyone has been calling from friends to church members. His brother informed me that he has been found at dawn. I want to thank Ghanaians for their love and support. They have been more than a family.”

Meanwhile, Atsu sustained some injuries after being rescued from the rubble that he was trapped in for over 24 hours.

This was confirmed by Hatayspor manager Mustafa Özat, who said the club’s sporting director was, however, yet to be found.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano also reported earlier that the Ghanaian winger was having difficulties with breathing after being rescued.

“Christian Atsu has been found alive and has now been rescued from the rubble and transported to hospital after suffering injuries to his right foot and suffering from breathing difficulties. Stay strong, Chris!” Romano wrote on Facebook.
